What Happened

Ian Botham has refused to withdraw his criticism of Ben Stokes, saying the England all‑rounder let himself down during the 4‑1 Ashes defeat in Australia last winter. The remarks resurfaced when Botham spoke at the Cheltenham Literature Festival to promote his new book Seasons and was asked about Stokes’ mid‑Test resignation against New Zealand. Botham repeated his view that England’s preparation was poor, noting the squad had only two and a half days of cricket before the Perth Test and that players broke curfews with late‑night drinking. He praised Stokes as a “bloody good cricketer” who performed well but slipped in the final months as the team fell 2‑0 down, one loss coming in just two days. Botham also said he was seen at the holiday spot Noosa with five days off, calling the behaviour “poor”.

Reaction

Stokes replied on the Ashes tour by labeling Botham and former captain Michael Vaughan “has‑beens”. Botham later pointed to a throw‑away line in his book – “Well, well, well, Ben Stokes, you are now a member of the has‑been team” – that did not sit well with Stokes. He contrasted today’s off‑field habits with his own era, when England players socialised at wineries between matches but stayed focused while winning.

Context

Debates over off‑field discipline have long accompanied England cricket tours, with curfew breaches and drinking habits often blamed for affecting team morale and performance.
