Baylor Downs Top-Ranked Florida as College Basketball Exhibition Season Delivers Early Surprises

College basketball exhibition matches are underway following a turbulent offseason marked by legal disputes, highlighted by Baylor's 82-76 overtime victory against preseason AP Top 25 favorites Florida. Penn State transfer Kayden Mingo led Baylor with 31 points and four assists while playing against a Florida defense that kept all five starters on the court for over 33 minutes each. Florida struggled from beyond the arc, hitting just four of 29 three-pointer attempts and missing 13 free throws, though their overall paint dominance suggests the team remains strong despite the early loss.

Indiana secured a decisive win over North Carolina, exposing physical shortcomings in the Tar Heels' lineup as Indiana won the rebounding battle 53-31 and added 17 second-chance points. Indiana players Aiden Sherrell and Samet Yigitoglu controlled the boards, bolstering confidence in the Hoosiers' revamped frontcourt. Meanwhile, North Carolina guards Neo Avdalas and Terrence Brown faced difficulties against Indiana's defense, leaving coach Michael Malone with backcourt challenges ahead of the regular season.

Fast Pacing

Illinois shifted its offensive strategy away from pick-and-rolls, opting for a faster pace with increased one-on-one drives and strong spacing. The new approach yielded 105 points in an exhibition, supported by strong performances from freshmen guards like Quentin Coleman, who contributed 14 points, eight assists, and seven rebounds. Elsewhere, St. John's guard Quinn Ellis played 56 minutes, recording 13 points, nine assists, eight rebounds, and just one turnover. Rutgers also showed promise as Virginia Tech transfer Christian Gurdak posted 20 points and 15 rebounds in his matchup against St. John's.

Context

Exhibition games serve as early testing grounds for teams to integrate new transfers and freshmen before the official regular season begins. Analysts look at these matches to separate temporary shooting slumps from permanent roster strengths, though team depth and legal eligibility issues for certain players continue to cast uncertainty over several programs.
