Indian para judoka Kokila Kaushik won the silver medal in the women's J2-52 kg category at the Asian Para Games on Monday, marking a historic first silver for an Indian woman in the sport at the continental event.
The Journey to Success
Born with a genetic vision disability in Hisar's Azad Colony, Kokila grew up alongside her siblings Safalta and Kushal, with doctors at PGIMS Rohtak confirming at age seven that her condition could not be cured. She later enrolled at a judo academy at Mahavir Stadium under coach Brijendra, before beginning training under coach Munawar Anjar Ali Siddiqui at the Indian Para Judo Academy in Lucknow. Her career milestones include a silver at the 2019 Commonwealth Judo Championships, a bronze at the Hangzhou Asian Games, a quota for the Paris Paralympics, and medals at the IBSA Asian Championships in Astana, IBSA Grand Prix in Egypt, and IBSA Judo World Cup in Tbilisi.
Monday's Bouts
On Monday, Kokila secured a golden-score victory over reigning world champion Yi Liu of China before losing the final by Ippon in 21 seconds against Kyrgyzstan's Aibike Ulanbek Kyzy. Her father, Krishan Kumar Kaushik, shared that the medal serves as a direct answer to critics who taunted the family about her visual impairment in the past.
Context
