UPDATE - follow-up to Two killed in firing on firewood collectors in Manipur's Imphal East: Unidentified armed attackers killed three Meitei civilians and injured three others in a hilly area near the border between Imphal East and Kangpokpi districts on Monday morning. The victims were part of a group of 16 people loading firewood onto a vehicle at Nongshum.

Protests and Official Response

The dead were identified as Arubam Ronil (35), Lairenlakpam Inaobi (44) and Kshetrimayum Sushil (32). Protesters later left the bodies of two victims at the gate of Chief Minister Yumnam Khemchand Singh's official bungalow in Imphal, prompting security forces to fire tear gas shells to disperse the crowd before moving the bodies to a hospital. Chief Minister Singh visited the injured at the hospital and promised that the government would pay all medical expenses. He also held a security meeting with home minister Konthoujam Govindas alongside police, Army, and paramilitary officials to tighten security in vulnerable areas. Deputy Chief Minister Nemcha Kipgen condemned the attack, urged people to stay calm, and asked security forces to arrest the culprits quickly. The Meitei Heritage Society also condemned the violence and demanded strict action against the attackers.

Related Incidents

Separately, a 24-year-old man named Thokchom Rakesh died from gunshot wounds after a fight during a musical concert in Thoubal district's Khangabok area on Sunday night. Three others were hurt in that incident, leading the local District Magistrate Yumnam Robita to impose movement restrictions in the area while police investigate the cause. About 40 minutes after the concert incident, a bomb blast near the Singjamei police station in Imphal West injured three Central Reserve Police Force personnel, identified as C. Poonambam, Ramesh Kumar and Pabitra Kumar Jena.

Context

These violent incidents highlight the ongoing security challenges and ethnic tensions in various parts of Manipur. Authorities frequently deploy additional security personnel and impose movement restrictions to prevent local clashes from escalating further.
