A woman testifying in the trial of Russell Brand told a London court she closed her eyes and tried not to be there while she was allegedly raped at a bar in 2004.
Trial Details
Brand, 51, has pleaded not guilty to seven charges involving six female complainants over a 10-year period from 1999 to 2009. The charges include three counts of rape, three charges of sexual assault, and one count of indecent assault. The complainant told Southwark Crown Court that she had been talking to Brand about his role hosting the Channel 4 show Big Brother's Big Mouth at a birthday party in Soho when he grabbed her breasts and dragged her into a flooded toilet. She stated the attack was swift and left her in disbelief and shock.
Defense and Delay
During cross-examination, Brand's barrister, Ian Winter KC, suggested Brand and the woman went to the toilet consensually for a kiss and a cuddle, but stopped because the toilet was flooded and filthy. The complainant rejected this claim and said she did not struggle because he held her strongly on the arm. She waited two decades to go to the police because she feared his celebrity status, believed it would be her word against his, and worried she would face isolation at work. She worked for MTV at the time. She also pointed to the lad culture of the 2000s, which she said discouraged women from reporting such incidents.
Context
High-profile legal trials involving historical sexual assault allegations often bring scrutiny to how societal attitudes and workplace culture have shifted over the decades. Defendants in criminal trials are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
