Wall Street finished the day with mixed results on Monday as technology shares staged a recovery from heavy losses suffered during the previous week. The tech-heavy Nasdaq composite index jumped 1.1 per cent, while the S&P 500 gained 0.4 per cent to bounce back from its worst weekly performance since June. Outside of the technology sector, trading remained uneven across the broader market. The Dow Jones Industrial Average fluctuated between gains and losses before closing down 36 points, or 0.1 per cent, and most shares outside the artificial intelligence industry actually declined. Market participants kept a close eye on upcoming corporate profit reports alongside individual stock movements while continuing to debate heavy spending trends and financing methods within the artificial intelligence sector. Chip giant Nvidia climbed 1.4 per cent on Monday, serving as one of the primary drivers for the S&P 500. As the most valuable company on Wall Street, its share price movements carry substantial weight for the wider index. Meanwhile, cloud-based chip renter CoreWeave experienced wild price swings, initially jumping over 7 per cent in morning trading before sliding into a loss and ending the session down 0.4 per cent, following a steep 25.2 per cent drop the week before. Investors are now awaiting crucial quarterly earnings updates later in the week to gauge the true strength of technology budgets. Meta Platforms is scheduled to release its financial results on Wednesday alongside semiconductor equipment supplier Lam Research. Analysts surveyed by FactSet anticipate that overall corporate earnings for S&P 500 companies will show a robust annual growth rate of 29 per cent for the summer quarter compared to the same period a year ago.

Context

Financial markets frequently experience turbulence when high-growth sectors like artificial intelligence rely heavily on borrowed capital during periods of rising interest rates. Stock indexes often react strongly to earnings reports from major technology firms because their recent rapid gains have driven a significant share of overall market growth.
