The US dollar traded in a narrow range at the start of the week as improving investor confidence supported higher-yielding currencies, while political unrest in Europe created new challenges for traders. The euro held steady at $1.1216 and the British pound rose 0.1% to $1.3308. The Australian dollar and New Zealand dollar both edged up 0.1% to reach $0.6986 and $0.5668 respectively. Meanwhile, the US dollar remained flat against the Japanese yen at 158.56 yen ahead of a 20-year Japanese government bond auction. Chris Weston, head of research at Pepperstone Group in Melbourne, noted that foreign exchange markets showed a better appetite for risk, though Europe proved less convincing. Weston pointed out that French sovereign risk is being priced into European equities, even though the euro's resilience suggests traders do not yet view it as a systemic problem.

Unrest in Europe

Political tensions escalated sharply in France and Italy due to widespread unrest. French authorities imposed curfews in several cities after anti-government protests disrupted President Emmanuel Macron's final months in office. In Italy, the government announced plans to deploy 500 troops following two days of civil unrest. Analysts at ING highlighted that the spread of French government bonds over Germany widened under renewed pressure from the violent protests. Markets are also bracing for further developments as the French Parliament prepares for a first formal vote on the revenue section of the 2027 budget finance bill. The spread between French and German 10-year government bonds widened by 9.9 basis points on Monday to 147.3 basis points. In other markets, the US dollar index rose 0.2% to 101.98, ending two days of losses, while the US 10-year Treasury bond yield stayed flat at 5.131%. The dollar remained flat against the Chinese yuan at 6.6811 in offshore trade after the People's Bank of China kept interest rates unchanged, matching market expectations. Cryptocurrencies showed little movement, with bitcoin holding at $81,906.58 and ether edging up 0.3% to $2,405.99.

Context

Foreign exchange markets constantly react to a mix of economic data, central bank decisions, and sudden political events across different countries. When social unrest or political instability hits major economies like France, it often shakes investor trust and shifts bond yields and currency values. At the same time, central bank policy choices and key debt auctions guide how global funds move from day to day.
