Premier League referees chief Webb defends yellow card for Botman tackle

Premier League referees chief Howard Webb has defended the decision to show Newcastle defender Sven Botman only a yellow card for a tough challenge on Aston Villa striker Nicolas Jackson.
The Tackle And VAR
Referee Jarred Gillett booked Botman in the 18th minute of Saturday's match for a foul that Webb described as a high-end reckless challenge. Video assistant referee Stuart Attwell chose not to intervene because there was no secondary scissor action and contact did not involve studs. Webb explained that the VAR only steps in when an on-field decision is clearly wrong, noting that the call would have stood regardless of whether the referee initially showed a yellow or a red card. Villa won the game 1-0 thanks to a 36th-minute goal by Johan Manzambi.
Reactions
Nicolas Jackson stated after the match that he nearly broke his leg and hoped the challenge would result in a red card next time. Sky Sports pundits strongly disagreed with the decision, with Jamie Redknapp calling it dangerous and former referee Dermot Gallagher arguing it met all the criteria for a red card. Jay Bothroyd also claimed the tackle could have broken Jackson's leg. Webb responded that robust tackling remains part of the English game, though officials must protect player safety.
Context
Video assistant referee technology aims to catch clear and obvious errors without taking control away from on-field match officials. Premier League referees have adopted a lighter-touch approach this season to let on-field judgments stand whenever possible.
