Willie Peters is taking on his first National Rugby League head coaching role as the inaugural coach of the PNG Chiefs.

Early Expectations

Peters first experienced intense pressure as a teenager playing for South Sydney in 1997. Former Rabbitoh Craig Coleman predicted at the time that Peters would dominate the premiership like Peter Sterling. Peters says facing those early comparisons built the resilience he needed for his coaching career. He finished his playing career at age 26 before moving into coaching roles.

The New Role

Australian and England clubs previously earmarked Peters as a strong mentor after success at Hull KR and a spot on the Kangaroos brains trust for the Ashes series. He accepted the Chiefs job sight unseen before visiting Papua New Guinea for the first time on a Friday. The start-up club offered him the chance to build a roster and staff from scratch, alongside tax-free wages to offer recruits. Players and staff will live together in close quarters at yet-to-be-built new residences at the Airways resort.

Coaching Philosophy

Peters plans to use his experiences to shape the new franchise while leaning on his own core philosophy. His non-negotiable mantra for players is competing with world-class effort as a daily choice. He also focuses on building relationships and maintaining a high level of care.

Context

Start-up rugby league clubs face unique challenges when building a brand and roster from the ground up in a new market. Port Moresby offers a distinct environment for players and staff compared to traditional Australian or English clubs. Coaching a national team setup brings an intense level of community and country-wide support.
