Filmmaker Karan Johar has announced that his upcoming film about Rameshwar Nath Kao, the founder of India's external intelligence agency Research and Analysis Wing, will release in cinemas on August 11, 2028. Karan shared the news on social media to mark 58 years of R&AW, stating that the project is based on Nitin Gokhale's book Gentleman Spymaster. Karan first talked about this movie in January 2020 through a collaboration between Dharma Productions and Still and Still Media Collective. The film will explore how Kao founded the agency, his work in international espionage, and its very first mission. Rameshwar Nath Kao lived from 1918 to 2002 and served as an intelligence officer and bureaucrat. Then Prime Minister Indira Gandhi appointed him as the founding Secretary of R&AW in 1968, and he led the agency until 1977. At present, the makers have not shared any details about the cast, director, or other members of the creative team. This project is not the only adaptation planned around his life, as filmmaker Hansal Mehta was announced as the creator of an OTT series in 2022 based on R K Yadav's book Mission R&AW, though there have been no recent updates on that series.
