Chennai Super Kings hire Zaheer Khan as head coach for 2027 IPL season

Chennai Super Kings have named former India left‑arm fast bowler Zaheer Khan as head coach for the 2027 Indian Premier League season. He takes over from Stephen Fleming, who ended an 18‑year stint with the franchise and has moved to a role with England cricket, being appointed England’s men’s Test head coach in July. Zaheer retired from IPL play in 2017 after appearing in 100 matches and claiming 102 wickets at an average of 27.27. His international career saw him pick up 610 wickets across all formats. After retiring, he served as Mumbai Indians’ Director of Cricket Operations ahead of the 2019 IPL and later became the club’s head of global development. He was also named mentor of the Lucknow Super Giants for the 2025 season but left before the next campaign. Speaking to CSK, Zaheer said it is an honour to join one of the most successful IPL teams and that the Chepauk Superfans make the atmosphere special. Team owner Rupa Gurunath welcomed him, citing his distinguished playing record and talent‑nurturing ability as a boost for the franchise. Managing Director K.S. Viswanathan called Zaheer a world‑class bowler and praised his mentorship of young fast bowlers, adding that his cricketing brain will strengthen the team’s core.
