Volkswagen issues OTA update to cap ID.4 charge at 80% after fire risk recall

Volkswagen will push an over‑the‑air update that caps the maximum charge of 22,524 ID.4 electric SUVs at 80 percent to prevent possible battery fires.
What Happened
Recall documents filed with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration say the batteries can ignite when charged above 80 percent under certain conditions. This is the second recall this year; a January recall covered nearly 44,000 ID.4s from the 2023‑2025 model years for similar fire concerns. The OTA update will set the limit and warning stickers will be placed on the cars. The limit is a temporary fix while Volkswagen works on a permanent solution, because the exact cause of the fires is still unclear. Car and Driver has asked Volkswagen to confirm whether the two recalls are linked and will update the story when more information is available.
Reaction
Dealers have already been told about the issue. Owners will receive notification in late November. InsideEVs reports the OTA code will have been active for about a month by then. The update may cause reduced driving range or performance if the fire‑risk conditions exist.
Context
Limiting charge to 80 percent reduces stress on the battery cells, lowering the chance of overheating that can lead to fire. This approach is common in electric‑vehicle recalls when the root problem is not yet fully diagnosed.
