UPDATE - follow-up to Jane Dodds standing down as Welsh Liberal Democrats leader: Jane Dodds is stepping down as leader of the Welsh Liberal Democrats after nearly nine years in the role. Dodds stated that it is time to hand over leadership to a new generation. She will remain the party's sole Member of the Senedd for Brycheiniog Tawe Nedd. Nominations to replace her open on 23 October and close on 16 November.
Reactions and Succession
Only David Chadwick, the party's lone MP, is eligible to seek nomination at this stage. Chadwick needs the backing of 50 party members to run unopposed. He stated that he will release a statement about his own political future in the coming days. Party president Tim Sly praised Dodds for leading the party through turbulent years with warmth and integrity.
Context
Jane Dodds took charge of the Welsh Liberal Democrats in November 2017 after previously working as a social worker. The party has maintained just a single seat in the Senedd since 2016, first held by Kirsty Williams before Dodds won election in 2021.
