Delhi Police transferred a second case registered against Cockroach Janta Party leaders Saurav Das and Ashutosh Ranka to the Crime Branch. The specialized unit will now investigate two separate cases involving the two politicians.
The Incident
On October 13, Mr. Das, Mr. Ranka, Ajinkya Shinde and 11 other members of the Cockroach Janta Party reached Jantar Mantar by trespassing through private premises. Jantar Mantar has been denotified as a designated protest site. Police personnel deployed at the spot intervened and tried to stop them before detaining all 14 people and filing two First Information Reports.
Custody Status
A Special Executive Magistrate sent Mr. Das and Mr. Ranka to five-day judicial custody on October 14 for breaching peace bonds. Their judicial custody was later extended by two days on Monday, October 19. The first case linked to them entering the Jantar Mantar area was transferred to the Crime Branch on the same day.
Context
Jantar Mantar in New Delhi is a historic location frequently used for public demonstrations, though specific areas can be restricted or denotified by authorities. Police routinely file First Information Reports and detain individuals when protestors breach restricted zones or violate peace bonds.
