Australian MP Helen Haines lost both legs after a vehicle attack on Monday, her husband Phil Haines said. Surgeons amputated her left leg on the day of the attack and had hoped to save the right leg, but they could not. The right leg was therefore also removed in the same operation. Haines was rushed to hospital where the emergency procedure was carried out. The attack and her injuries are still being investigated, and officials have asked the public to refresh for updates as the story develops.
Context
Violent assaults on elected officials are uncommon in Australia, and severe injuries such as double‑leg amputation require lengthy rehabilitation and ongoing medical care.
