French President Emmanuel Macron has accused overseas leaders, including U.S. President Donald Trump, of trying to gain political points by spreading false stories about recent riots in France.
Unrest And Claims
Protests over high living costs triggered widespread looting and rioting in Paris and other French cities last weekend. Mr. Trump used the violence to rally his supporters, making unproven claims that Muslim migrants caused the trouble and urging Mr. Macron to close the national borders. Speaking in Qatar, Mr. Macron hit back by stating there was foreign manipulation of information. He pointed out that people have shared fake, computer-generated images of events that never took place, while pushing false narratives about the country being overrun by outsiders.
Energy Tour
Mr. Macron made these remarks at the end of a Gulf tour aimed at finding solutions to the energy crisis and rising fuel prices. During the trip, he secured an extra 100,000 tonnes of diesel every month from the United Arab Emirates, along with another 100,000 tonnes to be confirmed in Bahrain. Officials at the Elysee palace stated that total new diesel supplies could reach nearly 295,000 tonnes per month, including amounts from Saudi Arabia, which covers more than ten percent of the nation's monthly diesel needs.
Context
Leaders often travel to major energy-producing nations during domestic crises to secure crucial fuel supplies and stabilize local prices. At the same time, social media platforms can quickly spread unverified claims and fake images during periods of civil unrest, which political figures frequently use to influence debates in their own countries.
