First-year MBBS students now have five chances to pass their exams after a new order from the National Medical Commission. Until now, students only had four permitted attempts to clear these papers. Kerala University of Health Sciences Vice-Chancellor Mohanan Kunnummal announced that supplementary exams in Kerala are now pushed to November 9, moving them from the original October 27 date.

Students from the 2019 batch onwards will benefit from this updated provision. The total time allowed to finish the entire MBBS course, which includes the internship, stays at ten years. During the COVID-19 pandemic, the commission previously gave a fifth mercy chance only to the 2019 and 2020 admission batches. Vice-Chancellor Mohanan Kunnummal asked students to make good use of this extra chance to pass their first-year exams.
