NSE Stock Exchange Faces Market Focus on Options Revenue As It Prepares to List Shares

IPO Valuation And Listing
National Stock Exchange shares are scheduled to list on September 24 after a ₹22,569-crore initial public offering that closed on Monday and was fully subscribed by the second day. At the upper end of its ₹1,700 to ₹1,875 price band, the IPO values the country's largest stock exchange at about ₹4.42 lakh crore.
Revenue Dependence On Options
Options remain the exchange's biggest earnings engine, accounting for about 60 per cent of operating revenue. Transaction charges made up 78.65 per cent of operating revenue in FY26, with options alone contributing 60.22 per cent. Weekly index options contributed 46 per cent of operating revenue. Religare Broking noted that this high dependence on transaction charges increases sensitivity to trading activity and regulatory changes.
Regulatory Pressure And Market Share Loss
Financial performance has already felt the impact of tightening rules around derivatives trading by the Securities and Exchange Board of India and a higher securities transaction tax. NSE operating revenue fell 3.15 per cent year-on-year in FY26, while profit declined 15.47 per cent. Angel One reported that equity options notional average daily turnover dropped to ₹258.28 lakh crore from ₹312.84 lakh crore. NSE also lost market share to BSE in options premium turnover, with its share dropping from 96.86 per cent in FY24 to 87.43 per cent in FY25, 74.71 per cent in FY26, and 68.48 per cent in the June quarter. Nirmal Bang Research stated that this competitive shift could weigh on transaction revenue growth.
Non-Transaction Growth
Non-transaction revenue grew from 17.93 per cent of operating revenue in FY24 to 21.35 per cent in FY26, led by data centre racks, connectivity, data feeds, and index licensing. SBI Securities estimated data-based services at about 12 per cent of FY26 revenue. Revenue from colocation, connectivity, data, and index licensing grew at an 18.4 per cent compound annual growth rate to ₹1,956 crore between FY24 and FY26. NSE also maintained about 93 per cent market share in cash equities and nearly 100 per cent in equity futures in FY26.
ExplainerWhy this matters
What Happened
The National Stock Exchange completed a massive ₹22,569-crore initial public offering valued at ₹4.42 lakh crore, but market analysts have raised questions over its heavy reliance on options trading revenue amid tighter regulatory scrutiny.
Why It Matters
Derivatives trading and weekly options generate the vast majority of NSE's earnings. When regulators like SEBI introduce stricter rules to curb excessive retail trading in derivatives, or when competitors like BSE capture a larger slice of the options market, it directly hits the exchange's operating revenue and net profit. Investors must weigh whether non-transaction businesses like data feeds can grow fast enough to offset this volatility.
What Happens Next
NSE shares are scheduled to list on September 24. Market watchers will closely monitor post-listing trading volumes, ongoing regulatory updates from SEBI, and whether BSE continues to chip away at NSE's market share in options turnover.
