Representative image · PexelsThe Samajwadi Party is preparing for the upcoming Uttar Pradesh Assembly elections by attempting to broaden its voter base beyond its traditional support groups. Party leaders believe conditions are favourable due to public dissatisfaction with the administration, high unemployment, and changing caste dynamics, building on the party's performance in the 2024 Lok Sabha elections where it won 37 out of 80 seats. However, the party has not yet started a major campaign against Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath. This hesitation comes from past concerns that the party is viewed mainly as a Muslim-Yadav group. To change this image, party president Akhilesh Yadav is pushing the Pichhda, Dalit, Alpsankhyak formula to reach out to Dalits and Other Backward Classes. This strategy includes symbolic changes, such as adding blue, a colour linked to B R Ambedkar, to the party's red-and-green colours, and planning Dalit conferences and worker training camps in places like Agra and Gorakhpur. The party also faces uncertainty regarding its alliance with the Congress. While some leaders feel an alliance helps unite Muslim voters, others worry that going solo might restrict growth among upper-caste and Dalit voters. Meanwhile, BJP leaders have claimed that Akhilesh is playing it safe to avoid reinforcing old identity perceptions, while also pointing to internal challenges of their own regarding caste equations and the political impact of their governance style.
