Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi landed in New York on Monday to attend the United Nations General Assembly, becoming the first senior Iranian official to set foot in the United States since the US‑Iran war began. The trip comes while West Asian tensions have escalated over the Houthis' growing role in the regional conflict. The United States granted visas to the Iranian core delegation on Thursday, clearing the way for Araghchi and President Masoud Pezeshkian to join the 81st UN session. Social‑media clips show Araghchi stepping out of his car under tight security; officials have not yet confirmed whether President Pezeshkian has arrived as scheduled. Pezeshkian is slated to address the General Assembly on Wednesday and to hold side‑meeting talks with leaders and senior officials from various countries. Iranian media said Araghchi travelled via a short stop in Qatar before reaching New York. Upon arrival, he called UN Secretary‑General Antonio Guterres to discuss the agenda and steps toward global peace and security, according to Tasnim news agency. The visit is unusual for three reasons. First, it occurs amid a six‑month spike in hostilities between Iran and the United States, with no sign of easing. Second, Iranian‑backed Houthi forces have intensified attacks on Saudi infrastructure and Red Sea shipping while the Strait of Hormuz remains closed. Third, the United States continues to label Iran the world’s leading state sponsor of terrorism, maintaining economic sanctions and visa limits. The State Department’s visa approval covers President Pezeshkian, Minister Araghchi and essential staff, a broader clearance than the limited visas granted to Iranian diplomats at last year’s UN meeting.
