A massive cargo vessel collided with a smaller Chinese fishing vessel in the Singapore Strait, though all crew members on both boats escaped injury. The incident occurred at approximately 8 am on September 17.

The Collision

The Panama-registered bulk carrier, named First Margaux, measures 229 metres in length and weighs about 82,300 tonnes. It struck the Luqing Yuanyu 108, a fishing boat measuring roughly 49 metres long. Ship-tracking information indicates both watercraft were travelling westward in the same lane toward the Strait of Malacca. The larger carrier was travelling at a higher velocity than the fishing boat and was attempting to pass it in heavy marine traffic.

Aftermath and Response

Video footage recorded from the fishing boat captures the huge ship closing in from behind before hitting the side and pushing it sideways, causing water to rush over the deck while crew members grab onto rails. The cargo carrier continued moving for about two hours before halting, turning around, and dropping anchor, while the fishing vessel kept transmitting its location signal and sailed to a port under its own power. Panama's Maritime Authority reported that the cargo ship sustained no damage, while the fishing boat suffered damage but stayed afloat. BBC Verify authenticated the social media clips, and maritime expert Sal Mercogliano noted that the Singapore Strait ranks among the busiest shipping corridors globally.
