Eleven people sustained injuries after a gunman opened fire near a vocational and technical high school in western Turkiye on Tuesday. The suspect was arrested shortly after the incident, which occurred in the Turgutlu district of Manisa province, located west of the resort city of Izmir.

Injuries And Suspect Details

Justice Minister Akin Gurlek stated on X that at least two of the injured victims were in serious condition. According to the HaberTurk news channel, the assailant was a student at the school who used a shotgun taken from his grandmother's house to fire randomly before attempting to flee on foot. The suspect's parents and grandfather, who owned the firearm, were taken into custody as part of the ongoing investigation.

Investigation And Background

Authorities have not yet determined a motive for the attack, though Justice Minister Gurlek noted that two chief prosecutors have been appointed to examine claims that the student faced bullying at the school. Anxious parents rushed to the location, resulting in brief confrontations with police officers who blocked entry to the building, as reported by Cumhuriyet. This shooting follows two other school attacks in Turkiye earlier this year, which prompted the government to increase educational facility security at the start of the academic year last week.
