General Motors will launch an AI‑powered version of its OnStar service on the 2027 Cadillac Lyriq. The upgrade arrives through an over‑the‑air software update that will be pushed in the coming months. GM says the new OnStar AI Assistant will later be added to more models across Cadillac, Chevrolet, Buick and GMC. Unlike regular voice assistants, the AI can pull data directly from the vehicle and answer plain‑language questions about its systems. Drivers can ask about fuel range, climate settings or any feature and receive a spoken reply without opening the owner’s manual. The assistant can also control functions – it will lower the cabin temperature if you say it’s warm, turn on dome lights, open the electronic glove box and even unlock the EV charge port. For electric‑vehicle owners, it can check whether the current charge is enough for a planned trip and suggest charging stops along the route. If the AI cannot resolve a query, it will connect the driver to a human OnStar Advisor. In 2027 GM will also roll out a new unified OnStar smartphone app that replaces the separate Chevrolet, Cadillac, Buick and GMC apps as well as the OnStar Guardian app. The app adds connected‑camera capabilities and lets owners set privacy permissions for the camera, microphone and location. This move is part of GM’s broader push to turn OnStar from a pure emergency service into a full‑featured digital tool for vehicle management.
Context
Automakers are adding AI assistants to stay competitive as drivers expect the same smart features in cars that they use on phones. OnStar, originally built for crash response, is now being expanded to handle everyday vehicle tasks.
