Exhibition Controversy
Visual artist Raihan Rajiv Vadra was told by authorities to remove or replace 74 out of 105 photographs just hours before his solo exhibition titled No Idea Is Final was set to open at Bikaner House in New Delhi. The affected photographs document public movements and student-led protests across the capital over the last six months, capturing scenes like police personnel detaining protesters and gatherings from within. Vadra stated that he received a written objection at 3:30 pm on Wednesday giving him 30 minutes to comply, with management citing the timing and context as overtly political.
Action and Reaction
By the evening of the opening, barely 35 exhibits remained, and authorities also objected to the blank frames that had replaced the taken-down photographs. Vadra refused to remove images featuring the Indian national flag, stating that staff took them down themselves after he left the premises. Congress leader Priyanka Gandhi Vadra called the move ridiculous and an attempt to muzzle the voice of the youth, while the Hindustan Times reported that the protests depicted in the images involve demands for the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar over electoral roll revisions.
Context
Cultural venues often have guidelines regarding political content and public events, leading to friction when exhibitions touch on sensitive civic movements. Bikaner House operates as a prominent cultural and exhibition hub in the national capital, frequently hosting diverse public art displays. Vadra stated that his proposal and layout had been approved months prior, highlighting the ongoing tension between artistic expression and institutional oversight in public spaces.
