Central government employees and pensioners are still waiting for the announcement on their dearness allowance for July. Many hoped the government would clear the hike before Dussehra, but the wait has now shifted to the upcoming union cabinet meeting headed by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Reports estimate a three percent hike, though the government has not made any official statement yet.

Expectations and Data

Government employees and pensioners usually get this July DA hike announced in September or October. Last year in 2025, the July hike was approved on October first with a three percent increase that took the DA from fifty-five to fifty-eight percent. The first hike for 2026 pushed it to sixty percent in January. Media reports suggest another three percent increase this time, which would take the DA from sixty to sixty-three percent if approved. This estimate is based on the All India Consumer Price Index for Industrial Workers, known as AICPI-IW. Labour Bureau numbers show this index rose by one point two points to reach one hundred fifty-four point four in August 2026.

Salary Impact

If the dearness allowance goes up by three percent to sixty-three percent, employee salaries will see a direct bump. An employee with a basic pay of eighteen thousand rupees will get five hundred forty rupees more every month. Those with a basic pay of twenty-five thousand rupees will get an extra seven-hundred fifty rupees, while thirty thousand basic pay gives a nine-hundred rupee increase, and forty thousand basic pay adds twelve hundred rupees. Pensioners will also see a matching change in their dearness relief based on these figures.

Context

Dearness allowance is a special payment given to government employees and pensioners to help them cope with rising prices and the cost of living. The exact amount of the hike is calculated using official consumer price index numbers that track retail inflation for industrial workers over time.
