The new Bengaluru and CSMT Mumbai Vande Bharat Sleeper train is likely to begin operations next month, marking the country's second such service. Prime Minister Narendra Modi flagged off the first Vande Bharat Sleeper train between Howrah and Kamakhya in January 2026, which cut travel time between those cities by up to six hours. A senior railway official confirmed the upcoming Bengaluru-Mumbai launch to Indianexpress.com, stating that the train will start its inaugural journey from Bengaluru. Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw first announced this route in May to improve rail connections between the two cities.

Route and Timing

The upcoming train will run via Kalaburagi and is expected to cut travel time down to under 20 hours. Right now, other trains take between 22 and more than 24 hours to finish the same journey. The route will include major stops at Kalaburagi, Solapur, Pune, Kalyan, and Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus. Bengaluru railway station operates under the South Western Railway zone, while CSMT Mumbai falls under the Central Railway zone.

Context

Vande Bharat trains are part of Indian Railways' push to upgrade passenger travel with faster speeds and modern sleeper coaches on key long-distance routes. Adding sleeper variants allows passengers to comfortably complete overnight journeys across major cities without needing daytime-only seating trains.
