What Happened

One person killed and eight injured when a drone struck King Fahd International Airport in Dammam, eastern Saudi Arabia, on Oct 21. The General Authority of Civil Aviation said the wounded, whose injuries ranged from minor to critical, were taken to hospitals. The airport also suffered material damage and flights were diverted, according to Flightradar24.

Reaction

Saudi authorities said the Saudi Coalition intercepted four drone attacks in the Eastern region on the same day. Earlier, Saudi air defences had shot down a drone heading for the Shaybah oilfield, where debris killed a Nepali and a Filipino worker and injured Pakistani and Indian nationals, also starting a fire in a contractor’s vehicle. The US State Department ordered diplomats and their families to leave its Saudi missions and the US embassy in Riyadh issued a security alert about possible further Houthi strikes.

What's Next

The attack follows a string of airport assaults, including a projectile strike on King Khalid International Airport on Oct 11 that killed one and injured 11, and a larger raid on Oct 10 that left 12 dead and more than 300 injured. Saudi officials warn the threat may continue as Houthi forces step up missile and drone launches against the kingdom’s transport and energy infrastructure.

Context

Houthi groups, backed by Iran, have been targeting Saudi oil facilities and airports since late 2023 as part of their conflict with the Saudi‑backed Yemeni government. Disrupting air travel puts pressure on Saudi logistics and signals the rebels’ expanding reach.
