The 1.5 degree Celsius temperature goal is now completely out of reach, and the world can only hope to limit global warming to 1.8 degrees before trying to lower it later. A new UN report states that years of weak climate action make the breach of the 1.5 degree target from the 2015 Paris Agreement totally unavoidable.
Country Emissions
The Emissions Gap Report released on Wednesday shows that the United States saw its yearly emissions rise by over 133 million tonnes of CO2 equivalent in 2025, which is the highest for any nation. Emissions also grew in China, while at least one dataset indicates a small slowdown in India, the world's third largest emitter. Across the globe, total greenhouse gas emissions in 2025 stayed flat at about 58.4 billion tonnes of CO2 equivalent, roughly matching 2024 levels.
Context
These findings mark a major shift from past climate assessments that suggested a small window to meet the Paris Agreement goals still existed if governments acted fast. Global temperatures continue to rise when countries fail to cut greenhouse gases like carbon dioxide and methane fast enough.

What Happened
A fresh United Nations report warns that humanity has officially lost the chance to keep long-term global warming within the 1.5 degree Celsius limit set by the 2015 Paris Agreement.
Why It Matters
Crossing this threshold permanently increases the risk of severe weather events, rising sea levels, and irreversible damage to natural ecosystems around the globe because governments have failed to lower fossil fuel usage quickly enough.
What Happens Next
Policymakers must now focus on keeping peak warming as close to 1.8 degrees as possible and finding ways to draw down carbon from the atmosphere later this century.
