UPDATE - follow-up to Rajya Sabha bypoll in Madhya Pradesh to fill seat vacated by Union Minister Murugan to be held on November 12: The Election Commission of India has scheduled the Rajya Sabha bypoll for Madhya Pradesh on November 12, 2026. The seat became vacant after former Union Minister L. Murugan resigned from the Union Council of Ministers and the Rajya Sabha on October 14. He had been Minister of State for Parliamentary Affairs and Information and Broadcasting. His term was originally set to end on April 2, 2030. Nominations must be filed by November 2, and candidates can withdraw by November 5. Counting of votes will happen on the polling day itself, November 12, and the entire election process is slated to finish by November 16. Murugan said his resignation will let him concentrate on strengthening the BJP in Tamil Nadu. With the BJP governing Madhya Pradesh, its candidate is expected to face little opposition and win comfortably in the bypoll. Rajya Sabha members are elected by members of state legislative assemblies, not by the public. This indirect election involves elected MLAs casting votes.
Context
The bypoll follows standard procedure when a sitting member quits before the end of the term, and it reflects the BJP’s dominant position in Madhya Pradesh politics.
