Kanathur police arrested 30-year-old social media influencer Jason Samuel Vijayakumar on Thursday in connection with the death of fellow YouTuber and financial influencer V. Harish.

The Investigation

Tambaram City Police stated that the arrest followed a formal complaint filed by the victim's 51-year-old father, J. Vinayagam. According to investigators, 27-year-old Harish died by suicide at his rented home in Kanathur on October 20. Police registered the case under Section 108 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita based on witness statements, documentary evidence, and the father's complaint. Authorities stated they plan to produce Samuel before a judicial magistrate to seek his remand in judicial custody.

Allegations and Dispute

Police alleged that Samuel attempted to extort money from Harish and published defamatory videos about him online. The posts reportedly contributed to the blocking of Harish's social media accounts and caused severe distress leading to his death. Harish, a Puducherry native who ran the channel 'Finance with Harish', had gathered 1.3 million followers providing financial advice. Prior to his arrest, Samuel denied harassment claims in a social media post, stating he only questioned whether Harish held proper qualifications and authorization to give financial advice, alleging Harish lacked registration as an investment adviser with SEBI and misrepresented his credentials with the Association of Mutual Funds in India.

Context

Online disputes between digital creators sometimes escalate into severe public controversies involving professional credentials and platform bans. Financial influencers operate under strict regulatory frameworks to protect everyday investors from misleading advice.
