Sri Lanka chased down 430 to beat England in Rawalpindi, sealing the second-highest successful run chase in one-day international history.

The Match

England posted 429-4 after Harry Brook smashed an unbeaten 202, the first double century by an England player in ODIs and the fastest double hundred in the format off 114 balls. Joe Root contributed 69 and Will Jacks added 66 not out. In reply, Sri Lanka lost early wickets to slip to 24-2, but Pavan Rathnayake led the fightback with 130, while Avishka Fernando and Dasun Shanaka both scored 97. Janith Liyanage hit a six off the penultimate ball from Josh Tongue to secure victory with one wicket and one ball to spare.

Bowling And Mistakes

England's bowling attack struggled without the rested Jofra Archer and left-out Adil Rashid. Sam Curran conceded 103 runs from his nine overs, recording the most expensive figures for an England bowler in an ODI. England were also hampered by the dew, which made it hard for bowlers to grip the ball, and they made errors in the field.

Context

Only South Africa have scored more runs to win a one-day international, chasing 435 against Australia in 2006. The match featured a record 123 boundaries across both innings, comprising 93 fours and 30 sixes, and left England winless after two games in the tri-series.
