English fast bowler Mark Wood has retired from international cricket, ending an eleven-year career that began in 2015. The 36-year-old played in all three formats for England and was part of two World Cup-winning squads, claiming an ODI title and a T20 title. Wood made his Test debut against New Zealand at Lord's in 2015. Across his career, he took 119 wickets in 38 Test matches, 80 wickets in 70 one-day internationals, and 54 wickets in 38 T20 internationals, making him England's sixth highest wicket-taker in the T20 format. He played a key role in England's 2019 ODI World Cup victory at home, taking 18 wickets during the tournament while regularly bowling above 95 miles per hour. Despite an injury, he bowled in the final against New Zealand at Lord's, which ended in a tied Super Over before England won on the boundary count rule. Wood also contributed to the 2022 T20 World Cup win in Australia by taking nine wickets in four matches, and he represented England in four Ashes series, including the 2015 victory and the 2023 home series comeback from two matches down to draw 2-2. Explaining his decision, Wood stated that while the timing might not surprise people based on the past year, it felt right at the end of his contract. He noted that he tried to prove himself by bouncing back from injuries each time, but could not win this final battle, calling it the greatest honor and dream of his life to play for England. Rob Key, the managing director of England men's cricket, praised Wood's ability to impact big matches, highlighting his Ashes wins, World Cups, and thrilling style of play.
