Tingling feet, numb fingers, and burning sensations at night in older adults are frequently dismissed as normal aging, but doctors warn these can signal a vitamin B12 deficiency. Dr. T.C.R. Ramakrishnan, an MD in pediatrics and DM in neurology, notes that older individuals often quietly adjust to these bodily changes without seeking medical help. Symptoms typically start subtly with pins and needles, reduced temperature sensitivity, nerve pain, or general weakness. These can progress to balance issues, walking difficulties, and coordination problems, causing people to become unsteady or avoid stairs. Vitamin B12 protects the nervous system by maintaining the myelin sheath, which helps nerve signals travel between the brain and body. Prolonged deficiency can damage peripheral nerves, leading to complications that are hard to reverse. Estimates show that 10% to 25% of people over 80 may be affected by this deficiency due to lower dietary intake, impaired absorption from reduced stomach acid or gastrointestinal issues, and certain medications. Family members are often the first to notice these warning signs, such as weakened grip strength, frequent numbness complaints, or changes in walking routines. Medical evaluation involving blood tests is essential when symptoms are severe, worsening, or accompanied by major balance loss, while early nutritional support can help protect nerve health.
