Representative image · PexelsThe trailer for the upcoming season of a popular reality show has sparked health concerns for Kim Kardashian after she revealed a diagnosis of esophagitis. The 45-year-old billionaire's worries are heightened by the medical history of her father, Robert Kardashian, who was a prominent attorney on OJ Simpson's legal defence team and died from oesophageal cancer in 2003 at the age of 59. In the show's clip, Kim is seen in a hospital bed expressing anxiety about the shared medical concern. Dr Shubham Vatsya, Director and Head of Department for Gastro Sciences at ISIC Multispeciality Hospital, explains that esophagitis is simply the inflammation of the esophagus, which is the food pipe carrying food from the mouth to the stomach. The condition is common and frequently linked to acid reflux, known as GERD, affecting millions of adults worldwide. Symptoms include burning sensations, pain, and trouble swallowing. Common causes of acid reflux include stomach acid repeatedly irritating the food pipe lining, certain medicines like painkillers or antibiotics, food allergies, smoking, excess alcohol consumption, and obesity. Other triggers involve eating large meals, spicy foods, or lying down soon after eating. While being diagnosed at age 45 does not automatically mean the condition is serious, Dr Vatsya notes that many adults in this age group may have endured untreated reflux for years, making proper medical evaluation essential. Esophagitis itself does not mean a person has cancer. However, persistent and untreated inflammation can lead to complications over time, such as ulcers, scarring, narrowing of the food pipe, strictures, dehydration, and nutritional problems. Long-term acid exposure can also cause Barrett's esophagus, which is a change in the food pipe lining that acts as a risk factor for esophageal cancer, though the overall risk remains low. Dr Vatsya confirms that a family history of oesophageal cancer in a first-degree relative like a parent deserves careful attention. In such cases, doctors may advise closer follow-up, strict reflux control, and periodic upper GI endoscopy to detect early changes. Treatment options vary based on the cause and may include acid-suppressing drugs, lifestyle adjustments, or treatments for allergies and infections. Recommended precautions include eating smaller meals, waiting two to three hours before lying down after a meal, maintaining a healthy weight, and avoiding smoking and excess alcohol.
