Assamese singer and composer Simanta Shekhar has quit the Bharatiya Janata Party and resigned from his post as chairperson of the Assam State Film (Finance and Development) Corporation. Shekhar shared his resignation letters on Facebook, sending them to Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma and state party president Dilip Saikia. He thanked Sarma for the chance to head the film corporation and expressed gratitude to party seniors and workers for their support.
Reasons And Future Plans
In his social media post, Shekhar stated that he made this choice entirely for personal reasons and that it has no link to any political views or policy issues. He also declared that he will not join any other political party in the future.
Recent Criticisms
His departure follows his public criticism of BJP MLA Vijay Kumar Gupta. Gupta had mistakenly stated during a media interaction that cultural icon Zubeen Garg had sung around 3,000 songs, whereas Garg actually sang over 40,000 songs across three decades. Gupta later apologized after facing heavy backlash. Shekhar posted online on September 20 telling the MLA to learn about Garg and his cultural contributions before making such remarks, adding that cultural respect comes before politics.
