A bomb squad thoroughly checked the new bus terminus in Vellore town on Wednesday after a fake bomb threat was reported to the Police Control Room. The threat came through a phone call made from Chennai to the police helpline, warning about a possible blast at the facility located off the Chennai-Bengaluru Highway near the Collectorate.
Search and Investigation
Upon receiving the warning, the Bomb Detection and Disposal Squad rushed to the spot and carried out extensive searches in parking lots, bus bays, and across the premises using sniffer dogs. The teams found no explosive devices, confirming the call was a hoax. The Vellore North police have registered a case, and an ongoing probe is trying to track down the caller.
Terminus Details
The large facility spans 9.25 hectares and was built at a cost of ₹53.13 crore under the Smart Cities Mission by the Corporation. Former Chief Minister M.K. Stalin inaugurated the terminus in June 2021, and a permanent police outpost was later opened there in November 2023. The busy transport hub handles the daily operation of more than 500 buses.
