What Happened
Chinese technology giant Alibaba Group has launched a new artificial intelligence chip named Zhenwu V900. CEO Eddie Wu unveiled the processor on Tuesday at the company's annual Apsara Conference in Hangzhou. Alibaba describes the new processor as the most powerful AI chip in China, noting that it can scale up to 500,000 cards per cluster.
Expansion Plans
To support rising demand, Alibaba plans to expand its global data center capacity to more than 20 gigawatts by the year 2032. Wu stated that the company is investing across three key areas: AI models, chips, and cloud infrastructure. The firm is also advancing Recursive Self-Improvement and aims to develop Qwen models with 5 to 10 trillion parameters while working toward artificial superintelligence. Additionally, Alibaba launched Qwen Intelligence for mobile devices, which is an end-to-end solution allowing phones to handle complex tasks.
Future Outlook
During his keynote address, Wu shared long-term projections for the machine intelligence era. He noted that machine thinking currently accounts for less than 3 percent of human thinking capacity, but he expects it to eventually grow to shoulder 99.9 percent of all thinking as technology scales.

What Happened
Alibaba Group unveiled its new Zhenwu V900 AI chip and announced a major long-term infrastructure expansion targeting over 20 gigawatts of data center capacity by 2032.
Why It Matters
This announcement highlights the intense race within the global technology sector to build independent, high-performance artificial intelligence hardware and cloud infrastructure. By developing ultra-powerful chips and massive data centers, Chinese technology firms are aiming to reduce reliance on foreign hardware while positioning themselves to handle the massive computing loads required for advanced large language models and future machine intelligence.
What Happens Next
Alibaba will need to execute its multi-year rollout plan by scaling up cluster card production, building out global data centers to meet the 20GW target, and deploying its Qwen models with 5 to 10 trillion parameters. Observers will watch whether the company can secure the necessary supply chains and energy resources to sustain this rapid infrastructure growth over the coming years.
