Waking up suddenly between three and five in the morning and struggling to fall back asleep is often caused by a sharp drop in blood sugar. Biohacking expert Dave Asprey explains that when blood sugar falls to seventy, the body releases stress hormones like cortisol and adrenaline to provide glucose for the brain's nighttime cleaning process. These stress hormones cause a person to wake up abruptly. To prevent this nighttime wake-up call, Asprey suggests eating a small snack before sleep. He recommends consuming raw honey, collagen, MCT oil, or mixing all three together. Medical experts have weighed in on this approach. Dr P N Arora from Yashoda Super-Speciality Hospital in Kaushambi notes that waking up at odd hours is common due to stress, fluctuating sugar levels, or other factors. He confirms that the body releases stored cortisol and adrenaline from the liver and muscles to boost glucose, which disrupts sleep. While he agrees the remedy might help, he cautions that it may not work for everyone. Holistic health and wellness coach Isha Lall breaks down the benefits of each recommended ingredient. Honey acts as a natural sugar that provides a gentle glucose boost to keep blood sugar stable overnight. Collagen contains glycine, an amino acid that helps the body relax, lowers body temperature slightly, and improves sleep quality. Vegetarians can look for plant-based amino acid alternatives since collagen comes from animals. MCT oil, derived from coconut oil, provides fast energy without raising insulin levels and helps the brain produce ketones when glucose is low. Experts advise keeping the portion small, such as a teaspoon of honey with a dash of collagen and a few drops of MCT oil, to avoid stomach issues or overstimulation. Dr Arora specifically warns people with diabetes who experience late-night sugar spikes, high fasting blood sugar, or midnight blood pressure changes to avoid this remedy entirely. Anyone with allergies or dietary restrictions should also consult a doctor first.
