Daily habits throughout the day dictate overall heart health, according to a cardiologist who outlined a routine spanning from morning to bedtime. Dr Prashant Pawar, an interventional cardiology consultant at Fortis Hiranandani Hospital in Vashi, Navi Mumbai, shared this advice for maintaining cardiovascular wellness.

Morning Routine and Diet

The morning sets the tone for the entire day, making breakfast an essential meal to avoid skipping. A heart-friendly diet should include produce, grains, legumes, and lean protein sources. Individuals should limit extra salt, sugary drinks, heavily processed items, and bad fats, keeping variety and consistency ahead of any single superfood.

Physical Activity and Daily Movement

Busy schedules often lead to prolonged sitting from desk work and commuting, but movement does not always require intense gym sessions. Adults need either 150 minutes of moderate exercise or 75 minutes of vigorous activity weekly, combined with muscle-strengthening workouts. Simple steps like taking stairs, walking during phone calls, or pacing in the evening help counteract a sedentary routine.

Medical Risks and Sleep

People dealing with diabetes, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, and obesity face higher heart risks and need regular health checks. Proper rest is equally vital, with adults requiring seven to nine hours of sleep nightly. Poor sleep habits can trigger high blood pressure alongside bad glucose and cholesterol levels.

Avoiding Harmful Habits and Stress

Protecting the heart also means cutting out smoking, tobacco use, and excessive alcohol consumption. Managing stress through meditation or brief breaks is necessary, while staying hydrated and watching portion sizes prevents reliance on packaged foods.
