Heavy rains caused by a deep depression over the Bay of Bengal have forced district authorities to shut schools in parts of Odisha and Andhra Pradesh. The weather system moved westwards and brought continuous downpours to coastal areas.
Odisha Measures
Administrations in Khurda, Jagatsinghpur, Ganjam and Gajapati ordered schools to close for the day. Malkangiri schools and Anganwadi centres will stay shut until September 24. Teachers and staff must report to schools, and principals will run roster duties to keep buildings open around the clock for emergencies. Authorities in Koraput and Kalahandi told teachers not to leave their posting places until September 25.
Andhra Pradesh Action
In Andhra Pradesh, Human Resources Development Minister Lokesh Nara announced school holidays for September 23 in Alluri Sitarama Raju, Vizianagaram, Srikakulam, Visakhapatnam and Anakapalli districts. He also advised people to avoid unnecessary travel and stay indoors.
Weather Forecast
The India Meteorological Department issued a red alert for parts of southern Odisha from September 23 to September 25. Extremely heavy rain is likely to hit Kalahandi, Nabarangpur, Koraput and Malkangiri on September 24 and 25. Andhra Pradesh State Disaster Management Authority managing director Prakhar Jain stated that widespread rains will continue on Wednesday and Thursday across districts including Visakhapatnam, Anakapalli, Kakinada, Konaseema, East Godavari, West Godavari and Eluru.
