England head coach Brian McDermott wants the Super League to welcome funding from the Australian rugby league to boost the sport in Europe.

Current Talks

Clubs in the Super League previously turned down a thirty-five million pound offer from the Australian Rugby League Commission, and a mid-October deadline passed with no deal sorted out yet. Bringing the two top competitions together aims to boost money coming into the European tournament.

The Financial Gap

McDermott, who also works as an assistant coach for the Gold Coast Titans, believes the on-field action and players are great, but the league needs better marketing. The massive money difference between the two hemispheres showed when the Australian league signed a record five-point-three billion dollar television agreement over seven years, while the Super League television contract with Sky Sports was worth about twenty-one-point-five million pounds a year.

Challenges and Future

The Super League still lacks a title sponsor, a new broadcast agreement, and confirmed fixtures for the twenty-twenty-seven season. London Broncos finished sixteenth on the yearly grading list despite winning the second tier, though they still hope to join the top flight with backing from Grant Wechsel and Darren Lockyer. McDermott also noted that financial support would help train better junior players to support the national team.

Context

Rugby league is heavily split between its traditional northern hemisphere base in the UK and its massive commercial powerhouse in Australia. Major outside financial injections are rare in the sport, making the ongoing discussions a rare chance to bridge a widening monetary divide.
