Indian Medical Association Seeks Ban or Changes in Sunny Deol's Suryaa Over Medical Profession Portrayal

Actor Sunny Deol's upcoming film Suryaa: Ant Se Aarambh Tak faces a major controversy ahead of its scheduled November 20 theatrical release. The Indian Medical Association has written to Union Information and Broadcasting Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw to object to the movie's promotional content and its portrayal of the medical profession.

Key Objections Raised

The medical association stated that trailers and teasers make it seem like corruption and unethical practices are widespread across the entire profession rather than being limited to individual cases. The IMA also raised serious concerns over scenes showing physical attacks on doctors, nursing staff and hospital workers, noting that presenting such violence as heroic or justified could endanger healthcare workers who already face safety threats in hospitals.

Ministry and Censor Board Response

The IMA requested an independent content review, corrective measures from filmmakers, and a ban or other action under the law if violations are found. Meanwhile, the Central Board of Film Certification clarified through the I&B Ministry and news agency ANI that the film has not yet been submitted for certification.

Cast and Background

Directed around a personal tragedy that pulls the lead character into a confrontation with the medical system, the movie stars Sunny Deol alongside Ravi Kishan, Pragya Jaiswal, Tanushree Chakraborty, Manish Wadhwa, Tinu Anand, Virti Vaghani, Jisshu Sengupta, Khalid Siddiqui, Anoop Trivedi and Rohit Tiwari.

Context

The Central Board of Film Certification evaluates films for public exhibition in India before they can hit theatres. Professional associations frequently flag cinematic depictions of real-world professions to prevent public misunderstandings or the normalisation of violence.
