Deep depression moving across the Bay of Bengal is set to strike the stretch between Visakhapatnam and Gopalpur, prompting Odisha to activate emergency plans. The India Meteorological Department forecasts thunderstorms and heavy to very heavy rain in Kalahandi, Nabarangpur, Koraput and Malkangiri as the system passes near Kalingapatnam village on Wednesday night. Heavy rain continues in Bargarh, Subarnapur, Boudh, Nuapada, Balangir, Kandhamal, Rayagada, Gajapati, Ganjam, Puri, Khordha and Nayagarh, and officials have placed all these districts on high alert. An IMD official warned that lightning‑filled thunderstorms and gusty winds of 50‑60 km/h could hit one or two locations within these areas. The department also cautioned that low‑lying parts may face localized flooding and that underpasses in cities could be closed. Expected rains may trigger landslides, mudslides, ground subsidence and disrupt communication lines. Early reports already note mudslides and fallen trees in Ganjam and Gajapati. Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi has ordered evacuations to safer ground. Disaster and revenue minister Suresh Pujari said at least 33 Odisha Disaster Rapid Action Force teams are on the ground, with nine more ready to move. Fishermen have been warned to stay away from the sea, and schools and anganwadis are shut in 12 districts. Emergency hotlines will stay staffed round the clock. Authorities are mapping vulnerable spots, stocking shelters with food and supplies, and keeping fire‑service units, lifeboats and jackets ready. The water resources department will monitor river and reservoir levels, inspect embankments and coordinate any needed water releases.
