India is looking to open new tea export markets as war‑hit shipments to Iran force a shift in strategy. Amit Kumar, Joint Secretary of the Union Ministry of Commerce and Industry, said the government is analysing data and sees a substantial rise in Indian tea sales to Oman. He noted that Oman’s purchases are increasing, prompting officials to focus on diversifying destinations. Export data from the United Planters Association of Southern India show that India shipped 153.24 million kg of tea between January and July last year, but volume fell 16.11 % to 128.56 million kg between January and June this year. In the same period, imports rose to 15.1 million kg in 2026 from 10 million kg a year earlier, highlighting a growing inflow of foreign tea. When asked about the rise in imports and planters’ worries, Kumar reiterated the aim to expand into varied markets and create fresh outlets for exporters. Ajoy Thipaiah, outgoing president of UPASI, warned at the association’s annual meeting in Coonoor that the renewed import flow threatens domestic producers. He called for remedial measures to protect Indian tea growers’ interests. The ministry’s push for new markets aims to offset the loss from Iran and balance the trade gap caused by higher imports.
