Pune has won the bid to host the prestigious UCI Road World Championships in the year 2032. The city beat Groningen and Drenthe from the Netherlands to secure this major global event. The final decision was made at the UCI Congress in Montreal after Pune presented its official candidature.
Venue Inspection And Bid Process
A three-member UCI inspection team visited Pune from September 4 to 6. They checked key spots like the Balewadi Sports Complex and the Savitribai Phule Pune University circuit. The team also looked at proposed hotels, race routes, start and finish locations, and operational plans. Officials used the routes from the Bajaj Pune Grand Tour to show how the city handles large cycling events. Pune successfully hosted a basic Level UCI road cycling event earlier in January this year.
Global Scale And Future Hosts
The World Championships bring the top riders of the sport together to fight for rainbow jerseys. For comparison, the 2025 event in Kigali brought in 734 riders from 113 countries, drew two million spectators, and reached nearly 300 million television viewers worldwide. Before 2032, the championships will take place in Abu Dhabi in 2028, Denmark in 2029, Brussels in 2030, and Trentino in 2031. Past events were held in Wollongong, Glasgow, Zurich, Kigali, and Montreal.
Reactions
Maninder Pal Singh, who is the Secretary General of the Cycling Federation of India, spoke about the win. He said it gives Indian cycling a chance to move from just taking part to actually performing well. He added that the federation wants to build a strong system for athletes, coaches, and officials over the years leading up to 2032.
