R Ashwin publicly defended former chief selector Ajit Agarkar on his YouTube channel after Agarkar left the role. Ashwin said Agarkar had to make tough decisions, including phasing out senior players, and called him a very good chairman of selectors. He noted that handling a transition is not easy and praised Agarkar for thinking about the future of Indian cricket rather than idolising individual records. Former batsman Aakash Chopra later thanked Ashwin for his support and highlighted that many big players remain bitter for 10‑15 years, holding grudges long after retirement. Chopra added that a lot happens behind the scenes that only Agarkar knows, and critics are often unaware of these backroom realities. He said some people abuse Agarkar and also target Gautam Gambhir, calling them toxic voices. Chopra argued that Agarkar is contractually bound and cannot reveal all details, so he will take Ashwin’s endorsement at face value. Both Ashwin and Chopra stressed that the transition period was difficult and that Agarkar’s decisions, though unpopular, were aimed at moving Indian cricket forward. Their comments underline the tension between former players and the selection committee during a period of change.
