India secured its first mixed doubles medal at the Asian Table Tennis Championships since 1954, ending a 72-year drought through the pair of Yashaswini Ghorpade and Harmeet Desai.

The Comeback

In the quarterfinals, Ghorpade and Desai faced South Korea's Ganghyeon Park and Daeun Lee and were trailing by two games and 1-7 in the fourth game. Ghorpade shifted the momentum by becoming more aggressive on service returns, allowing the pair to win the set and level the match at two games all before winning the decider.

Tournament Exit And Legacy

The duo eventually took the bronze medal after losing their next match 9-11, 9-11, 8-11 to Japan's Miwa Harimoto and Sora Matsushima. Harmeet Desai noted that winning medals consistently at the Asian level over the past five to six years helps shift public perspective on Indian table tennis.

Context

Table tennis success at the continental level requires high technical skill and mental toughness against top-ranked Asian opponents. This milestone adds to recent achievements by Indian paddlers in major international competitions.
