UPDATE - follow-up to Cyclone brewing as low pressure area forms in east-central, Southeast Bay of Bengal | Live: The active weather system building over the Bay of Bengal is projected to grow into a full cyclonic storm and hit land between the northern parts of Andhra Pradesh and the southern coast of Odisha by the morning of October 28.

Progress And Path

Official tracking shows the disturbance originated as a low-pressure zone over the east-central and southeast regions of the Bay of Bengal, and forecasters expect it to strengthen into a depression before turning into a deep depression and finally a cyclone. K. Naga Ratna, who heads the Amaravati Meteorological Centre in Andhra Pradesh, notes the system will likely make its way across the shoreline during the early hours of October 28 before tracking onward into Odisha.

Regional Impacts

In response to the advancing system, state authorities have stepped in with precautionary steps. The Andhra Pradesh State Disaster Management Authority has issued rain warnings specifically for the districts of Konaseema, West Godavari, Krishna, Guntur, Bapatla, Prakasam, and Rayalaseema. Meanwhile, separate heavy downpours have already impacted other regions, including lightning-heavy storms in Tiruchi and delta zones that disrupted evening traffic, alongside transit disruptions from a separate landslip involving a state transport bus on the Coimbatore-Nilgiris route.

Context

Tropical storms forming in the Bay of Bengal during the post-monsoon months frequently threaten India's eastern coastline with heavy rain and strong winds. Meteorological agencies track these low-pressure systems continuously as they gather energy from warm ocean waters to provide early warnings for coastal populations.
