Manchester City's perfect run in the Premier League came to a halt following a two-to-one defeat away at Aston Villa, with manager Enzo Maresca facing major defensive concerns. Nicolas Jackson scored twice for Villa at Villa Park, bringing City's total to nine goals conceded across their past four matches after starting the campaign by letting in eight goals in their first nine games. Both Gianluigi Donnarumma and Marc Guehi have struggled recently, with each player making three errors leading to goals since the start of last season, placing them among the top eight in the league for such mistakes. Against Villa, Guehi was caught out when John McGinn picked his pocket deep inside his own half for the opening goal, later received a yellow card for pulling down Jackson, and was substituted at the half-time interval. Donnarumma similarly struggled to keep out a low shot for the second goal. Manager Enzo Maresca admitted to TNT Sports that both goals were avoidable and stressed that his side must cut out mistakes and be more clinical after spending most of the match inside the opposition penalty box. Former City defender Steph Houghton noted on BBC Radio 5 Live that Villa executed a strong gameplan to nullify their opponents, while also pointing out that Donnarumma could have performed better on the second strike. City decided to sell James Trafford to Leeds for forty-five million pounds during the summer, and Trafford has since recorded more passes and better goal-preventing rates than Donnarumma. Maresca also experimented with his backline by starting Abdukodir Khusanov wide before moving him centrally to replace Guehi, while introducing Rico Lewis to fill the gap.
Context
Manchester City's heavy investment in players like goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma and defender Marc Guehi was intended to maintain their status as top contenders for the English league title. However, defensive instability can quickly disrupt a team's championship ambitions even when their attacking players create numerous scoring opportunities. Teams that press high and build attacks from the back often expose themselves to costly errors if their backline players struggle with distribution and ball retention under pressure.
