New York City's popular AMC Kips Bay 15 movie theater will permanently close its doors on January 3. AMC Chief Executive Officer Adam Aron revealed that the current building owner terminated their lease because nearby medical facility NYU Langone Health is in the process of buying the building to expand its operations. AMC officials stated they tried to propose multiple alternatives to NYU Langone, including enlarging the low-rise building to accommodate both medical growth and a cinema, or shrinking the theater space to keep it running. According to AMC, all of these proposed solutions were rejected. The building also houses a Fairway supermarket and a bank, which are both expected to close alongside the 15-screen theater.
Community Impact
The Kips Bay multiplex has operated continuously since opening on May 14, 1999, and AMC took over management in 2006. It stands as the chain's second-largest multiplex in New York City after the Empire 25 theater in Times Square. Local residents have shown massive support for the branch, staging a protest in September and earning praise from Aron. During several days this past summer, the location ranked among the 10 most attended AMC movie theaters in the entire United States out of more than 500 total locations. Aron specifically thanked Manhattan Borough President Brad Hoylman-Sigal and New York State Assembly Member Keith Powers for their leadership and advocacy in trying to save the venue.
Context
Urban real estate pressures often pit large cultural and entertainment spaces against expanding healthcare institutions in dense cities like New York. Movie theater chains have faced intense financial and structural hurdles in recent years due to changing consumer habits and landlord negotiations. Public campaigns and protests from local communities rarely succeed in reversing commercial lease terminations once property sales and hospital expansions are set in motion.
